We decided to go to saltlik during the YYC Food & Drink Experience so M could get a good steak and potato. I had been to Modern Steak the week before so I had something to compare it to.
Overall, the ambience at saltlik is quite nice; that being said, we were in the back of the restaurant where it was much quieter, with the heads up that we had to leave in 1.5 hours due to a large group coming in who would be seated in the back. It was fine by us because I had lost my voice with this cold that I had and couldn’t talk very loud at all.
Service was very pleasant – not too much, not too little. We each ordered a peppermint tea with mint (yah, lame, but remember I had a cold LOL). The YYC Food & Drink Experience menu was $40 pp, with the choice of a house salad or French onion soup to start, and as a second, either a certified angus beef prime sirloin with fries, mashed potatoes or fully loaded baked potato or a prawn spaghettini. For dessert it was a sticky toffee pudding.
We both chose the French onion soup to start. I had high expectations for a steak house… It was good but not great. I found that the soup lacked depth – the onions weren’t braised long enough to get the rich, deep flavour that it should have had. And there wasn’t enough cheese. It was also boiling hot and we had to wait forever to finish it. Actually, as soon as they cleared our bowls our steaks were delivered! How’s that for timing? Ironically, even though it took us forever to eat the soup I forgot to take a photo of it until it was too late!
The steaks were cooked perfectly. Tender and juicy at medium rare, and I quite liked the steak seasoning they used. A very different cut and a very different way of grilling the steak compared to Modern Steak.
The dessert was heavenly. I’m always a fan of a good sticky toffee pudding, and this was definitely at the top of my list. You sure can’t be afraid of sugar though – it was so sweet it made the back of my throat itchy. But the caramel sauce, the crispy wafer thing and the cool ice cream – all of it came together in a deliciously sweet sticky toffee delight. I couldn’t even finish all of mine…
Overall, a great experience with delicious food. I don’t know why I don’t think about saltlik more often. My past experiences have always been good, so I should really try to stop in again soon!
